While our sportswomen have done us proud at the Rio Olympics, there’s more reason to cheer our girls, and it comes from Jammu & Kashmir. The first ever Polo camp for women was conducted in J&K, so that they can participate at the National Level soon. This 12 day Polo promotional camp was began on August 4 and concluded symbolically on Independence Day. It was organised at the Bhimbhat Shagaran Polo Ground by the Himalayan Sports and Culture Organisation, in partnership with SECMOL School, Leh.
10 girls from all over Ladakh were selected and given competitive training in horse-polo by experts during the camp. As part of an exchange programme and understanding, SECMOL will provide professional training in ice-hockey in return.
This camp has encouraged the possibility of Jammu & Kashmir is sending their first ever Indian women team to the National Horse Polo Tournament to be held in Manipur in September – October.
A new chapter in history is being written in this region, which is otherwise in the news for conflict and unrest. Mohammad Amin, President of the Polo Promotion Committee, Kargil and Chairman of the Organization, said that this was an initiative which was finalized in March, during an informal meeting with the renowned Educationist and Reformist Sonam Wangchuk at Kargil
It is a heartening initiative to see girls being encouraged in sports like ice-hockey and horse-polo, which are traditionally considered a male domain. It is also a significant move to promote the girl child in India, which has always been applauded by P.M Narendra Modi.
Looks like the Olympics 2020 is going to see more history being written by the daughters of India!!
