It was indeed a proud moment for India as Chanu Saikhom Mirabai won in the women’s 48kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games and broke her own record with a total let of 196kg.
The 23-year old scored a gold medal followed by Maritius’ Marie Hanitra Roilya Ranaivosoa taking silver and Sri Lanka’s Dinusha Gomes winning bronze.
Mirabai lost at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and said she felt ‘devestated’. It was her drive and mission in life to become the best in her sport.
“I came here with the ambition of breaking my own record and I am glad I made it happen,” Mirabai said.
She won a silver medal at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, before qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics in the women’s 48kg category.
Considering herself her biggest opponent, Mirabai has strived to beat her own record and keep progressing forward.
“After the world championships, I started my training in Melbourne both mentally and physically. I am very happy and excited that I have achieved this. The crowd made me feel very at home,” she said.
Congratulations to the shining star, Mirabai!
